Seiko Alpinist: inspired by the first watch from 1959
Seiko presents the first Alpinist 1959 watch re-proposed in a highly functional reinterpretation that has always characterized the Prospex collection. The first Alpinist watch was presented in 1959 to meet the needs of mountain and outdoor sports enthusiasts. The watch was immediately a great success and also spread beyond the Japanese market to which it was originally dedicated. This model paved the way for the development of various devices for measuring time in sports, from diving watches to stopwatches.
The original watch was presented with a case with a screw back to prevent the entry of dust or sand particles inside. The very sturdy leather band bracelet was used to protect the watch from skin sweat. Indexes and hour and minute hands had luminous inserts to ensure perfect readability even in poor light conditions and the name Alpinist was evoked at three, six, nine and twelve o'clock and recalled the outline of the mountains which also represented the four main points compass.
The reinterpretation obviously reflects the 1959 Alpinist in every detail. The indicators are arranged on a glossy black dial and form an internal ring at the base as in the original watch. Obviously the indexes and hands are coated with Lumbrite to obtain maximum visibility even in the dark. The glass is a convex sapphire crystal and the strap is leather.
The watch has been entirely updated thanks to modern technology. There is a date window in the three o'clock position at four and five and its water resistance is up to 100 meters.
The watch is powered by a 6L35 caliber which guarantees an autonomy of 45 hours. Despite the addition of the date window and better performance, the case is only 1mm thicker.
This reinterpretation is a limited edition of 1959 pieces.
