Junghans Telemeter Edition: a classic with a story

The new Telemeter is a watch steeped in tradition, with historical roots dating back to 1951. The PVD-coated yellow gold stainless steel case and classic black dial complete the overall look of the watch. A special detail is the red telemetric scale that gives the watch its name, printed with precision on a discreet gray background. The watch is limited to 150 pieces.

The Rangefinder has a long tradition. In 1951, Junghans presented a chronograph for the first time that combined a rangefinder and tachymeter display. Today, Junghans presents a new interpretation of the historic watch. Of it, the elegant and sporty look of a classic chronograph of today is striking. The gold-colored case, combined with the black dial, gives the watch a modern retro character. Watches with this additional feature are rare, and Junghans is one of the few manufacturers to offer them. The new Telemeter Edition JF is inspired by one of the then rare gold models that Hannes Steim bought from the family of a deceased friend: the Junghans CEO was so impressed by this special piece that he expressed his desire to create a reinterpretation of this sporty and elegant model. “Initially only one piece was to be made for me, but the new watch found so many admirers at home that we produced a small series,” reports Hannes Steim. Now, it is being built in a limited edition of 150 examples.

The new Telemeter Edition JF features a yellow gold PVD coating on the steel case and a black dial in keeping with the original. The telemetric scale of the same name is printed in red on a gray background. It was built to measure distances to events that emit both light and sound such as thunderstorms, for example. This scale is based on the natural scientific phenomenon that light and sound travel distances at different speeds. To travel one kilometre, light takes an incredibly short - and therefore negligible - time of three milliseconds, while sound takes three seconds. So, if you see lightning in the sky, you start the chronograph and stop it as soon as you hear thunder. The distance of the storm can then be read on the rangefinder scale. The additional tachymeter scale is printed in silver on the edge of the dial and is used to measure average speeds, for example during a motorway journey by car. The time needed for one kilometer is timed with the help of route markers. The average speed can then be read on the scale in km/h. High-profile features The new Telemeter Edition JF comes with high-profile features. The high-quality dial with luminescent numerals is covered by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal which ensures excellent readability. The chronograph is powered by the Kaliber J880.3 automatic movement. with rhodium finished surfaces. The carvings on various parts of the movement and on the rotor, as well as the blue colored screws, are a delight to the eye of the observer looking through the caseback window. The watch features a black leather strap with gray stitching to match the color of the rangefinder scale.
